Autry National Center
On Saturday, 9 October, we will board a bus at the Hilton Garden Inn for a 17-mile, 20-minute drive to the Autry National Center in Griffith Park. The Autry celebrates the American West through three important institutions: Museum of the American West, Southwest Museum of the American Indian, and the Institute for Study of the American West.
The Museum of the American West, formerly known as the Museum of Western Heritage, was co-founded by Gene and Jackie Autry and Monte and Joanne Hale. With the opening of the Museum in 1988, Gene Autry realized his dream "to build a museum which would exhibit and interpret the heritage of the West and show how it influenced American and the world." Mr. Autry was a legendary recording and movie star whose illustrious career spanned some 60 years in the entertainment industry. He was also a broadcast executive and major league baseball owner (Anaheim Angels).
What is not generally known is that the Autry National Center has a wonderful collection of items of vexillological interest. This includes two of the oldest and most important flags related to the history of California: the Fremont Flag of the 1840s and the Alvarado Flag. The Autry will take us behind the scenes to view a selection of their flags and related items.
Optional Tours
We also are in the preliminary stages of looking into optional tours for Thursday evening, Friday and Monday day. Keep checking here to see what opportunities we are able to develop for these times.
The registration form is available here: NAVA 44 Registration Form. Please fill in the form and mail it in, accompanied by a check, or send payment via PayPal to treas@nava.org.

CALLING ALL VEXILLOGRAPHERS!
NAVA 44 and NAVA 45/ICV 24 Meeting Flag Designs: Deadline 31 March 2010
NAVA's 44th annual meeting will be held in Los Angeles, California in October 2010. The 45th meeting will be held in Washington, DC in August 2011, in conjunction with the 24th International Congress of Vexillology (ICV). As is our custom, a special flag will be created for each of these two meetings. All vexillographers are invited to submit suggested designs for the NAVA 44 and 45 meeting flags--they need not be NAVA members. The rules for submission are as follows:
1. Submissions should follow the rules of good flag design as described in NAVA's "Good Flag/Bad Flag" publication (available online at http://www.nava.org/Flag%20Design/GFBF/). They should allude to the meeting venue and to NAVA and the study of vexillology. For NAVA 45/ICV24, the design should also reflect the international character of the meeting.
2. Examples of past meeting flags are available at http://www.nava.org/NAVA%20Meetings/PastMeetings.php for NAVA meetings and http://www.nava.org/Flag%20Resources/FIAV/ICVs/icv.htm for ICVs. In the past, many NAVA meeting flags have used a "V" motif similar to the NAVA flag itself, and ICV meetings have often used the FIAV "bend" (knot) symbol. Either of these motifs may be used for the NAVA 44 and NAVA 45 flags; however, neither is required and they should only be used if they contribute to the overall excellence of the design.
3. All designs must be submitted by 31 March 2010. They can be submitted electronically to pastpres@nava.org, or by mail to Peter Ansoff, 7706 Bristow Drive, Annandale, Virginia, 22003-5146, USA. Submissions should include the designer's name, address, telephone number and/or email address, and should specify whether the design is for NAVA 44 or NAVA45/ICV24. Entries may also include explanations of the design if desired. If submitted on paper, designs should be approximately 3 x 5 inches; if electronic, they should be scaled to print at that size. Each member may submit a maximum of 5 designs for each meeting.
4. The winning flags will be selected from among those submitted. Judges may alter or combine designs in any way they see fit.
5. All designs submitted become the exclusive property of NAVA. By submitting your design(s) you are assigning your copyrights in the design(s) to NAVA for its exclusive use.
Vexillographers, start your engines! If you have any questions, contact Peter Ansoff at pastpres@nava.org.

CAPTAIN WILLIAM DRIVER AWARD GUIDELINES
1. The Captain William Driver Award was created in 1979 for the best presentation at the NAVA annual convention. It is named in honor of Captain William Driver, who christened the United States flag “Old Glory.” The award is generously cosponsored by NAVA Commercial Members.
2. The award consists of a certificate and US$250.
3. The executive board shall determine the recipient of the award based on the criteria given below. At its discretion, the executive board may determine that no presentation delivered at the convention has met the criteria for the award and decline to give an award that year.
4. The criteria for the award follow, in descending order of relative importance:
a. The presentation should be an original contribution of research or theoretical analysis on a flag or flags resulting in an advancement of knowledge in the field of vexillology.
b. It should be characterized by thoroughness and accuracy.
c. It should be well organized and, as appropriate, illustrated.
d. It should be delivered well, i.e., interesting for the audience as well as informative, such that it is easily comprehensible.
5. No presentation may be considered for the award unless a completed written text is submitted in advance of its delivery.
6. No single individual may be given the award more frequently than once every three years.
7. Because of the conflict of interest, current members of the executive board are ineligible for the award.
8. If at all possible, the executive board shall not give the award jointly to co-recipients. In extraordinary circumstances, the executive board may recognize another presentation with the designation “Honorable Mention.”
9. As a condition of being considered for the award, presenters agree that NAVA has a two-year right of first refusal to publish their presentation in either NAVA News or Raven: A Journal of Vexillology. This right of first refusal extends to both the actual recipient of the award and the remaining non-recipients. A presenter who desires to have his or her presentation published elsewhere may decline to have the presentation considered for the award, provided that the presenter makes this fact known before the presentation is delivered.
10. These guidelines should be distributed to presenters in advance of the annual convention.
William M. Belanich, Jr., of Hamilton, Ohio, designed the flag for NAVA 44, inspired by the flag of Los Angeles, the host city. The fly is red and the hoist green, separated by a serrated gold stripe recalling the “V” for vexillology. (The colors on the Los Angeles city flag are red for vineyards, golden-yellow for orange groves, and green for olive trees; they come from the flags of Spain and Mexico.) The stylized gold design in the hoist: two stylized and mirrored “4”s (in AR Destine font), denote the 44th annual meeting of NAVA and suggest angels’ wings, recalling the city's name. The committee adapted the concept of the angels from a design submitted by John C. Karp, Jr. of Minden, Nevada.
The NAVA Flag Design Committee: Peter Ansoff, Will Levin, Marlene Little, and John Purcell.
